Presentation Feedback

Great video-You got the history in 2 mins!

The activity works well too, getting the major brands reinforced at the start of the lesson

Good research-the key facts covered in bullet points.

Too much reading off power point to class harder to maintain interest.

Could have made more of Murdoch and importance of his influence over politicians etc.

The news corp brands are vital-could have stayed on the next slide for longer, and discussed these.

Big miss: where's is the phone hacking scandal? Your  missing the most aspect of news corp, recent history its also a major current debate in the media.

No plenary-you did have a final slide but needed to test the class,That the class had learned something from your lesson.

WWW: We had a great video which told the class everything we need to know about the company. We also had good detailed information on the slides.

EBI: Spoke to the class instead of reading off of the slide and spoke about the phone hacking scandal.

Mise en scene comparison

Mise En Scene Comparison

The image on the right shows us a female character dressed in an army outfit holding a gun, towards the camera.  The fact that a woman is holding a gun and dressed in an army uniform its quite ironic as women are usually portrayed as the weak and powerless character  however, in this case she is seen as a superior character in the frame. In addition, you can see an old fashioned car which suggests it is set in around in the   early 1920s. The car is also seen blown up with great amount of fires surrounding it, which suggests the genre of the movie is Action. It also portrays the female as powerful she is standing in front of the explosion and takes no notice of of it; she's focusing on something else rather than her safety  which tells us that she's loyal to her country. Furthermore, the make-up on the characters face looks like a typical woman's make-up which contrasts the fact that as she is a soldier, which connotes bravery, strength and dominance, she still wants to be feminine and lady-like. The lighting used is high-key lighting which allows the audience to see everything that's happening within the frame.

In the second frame, you can instantly tell that the genre of the film is a Sci-fi/action. This is firstly because of the weapons shown in the two male characters hands. They are not the ordinary weapons people use, they're the complete opposite. Secondly, I can tell its an action based film because of the facial expressions on their face as well as them holding their weapons firmly. The character facing towards the camera looks worried but annoyed at the same time. It looks like he's either trying to protect himself if anyone comes and jumps out on him or he's trying to find someone or something to kill. In addition,  the frame  it is set in an unusual and  unfamiliar place which suggests it could be set out of this world. Moreover, the characters are both wearing long robes which suggests it is not set in this time period; set a long time ago in a galaxy far away from earth. The lighting used is also high-key lighting which allows us to see everything within the frame.

In the last frame, you can see three characters, two of which are dressed in clean cut outfits wearing wings on their backs. You can also see that the main male protagonist who is wearing something unfamiliar to the audience. Its like he is wearing gear for a sport to protect himself from a ball or people. Moreover, you can see he looks quite surprised at the female character whereas she is seen smiling at him to say is if he had do to something but he didn't know anything about it. Furthermore, you can that the two characters on the right are both staring at the main character which suggests that he is the one who has to go on a mission. The fact the the other male character has no wings suggests he is just the female characters assistant. Furthermore, the lighting used is also high-key lighting which allows us to see everything within frame.

Movie shot analysis

Movie Shot analysis

The movie shot on the right from Twilight-Eclipse, shows us an image of three characters. It shows us how the male and female character are both standing behind another male character on the verge of killing the male dressed in a blue shirt looking at something, worried . The fact that the female character is seen breaking the protagonists neck and not the male, is quite ironic as women are seen as less dominant and powerful than men, however in this case its the opposite. It also suggests that the male holding the other males arm is helping the female in completing her mission as he is seen holding the protagonist so the female character can kill him easily.  In addition, the characters are seen wearing casual clothing which allows them to fit in with the environment they're living in. The female character had reddish;ginger curly hair which presents her as perfect which can portray her as the evil character in the movie or in other words the femme fatal. Furthermore, the facial expression on her looks very evil and cunning which suggests she wants to take revenge on him. The lighting used is high-key lighting where a lot of light has been used to make everything in the frame visible for us to see. Lastly, it seems as if the frame is set in a snowy forest as you can sort of see blurred tree trunks and frozen leaves covered in snow.

Mise-En-Scene frames

Mise-En-Scene frames

The image on the right shows us a crowd of men locked behind bars. The men are all wearing unclean, cheap clothed material which makes them look poor and unfortunate. Moreover, you can see them reaching out to the dog trying to grab the keys off of it. The dog is a prop. The use of having a guard dog  there suggests the male characters shown have committed a crime and so if they try and escape the dog will go after them. Furthermore, the most light is shown on the characters, which allows us to see their facial expressions, what they are doing and what they are wearing. The shadows in the corners of the frame causes the audiences to only look at where there is most light as they are the main subjects in this frame. In addition, the frame Is set in a Victorian-like prison, which instantly tells us that the frame is set back in the early 1800s.

The frame on the right shows us a crowd of men all pointing their swords at one man standing on top of a pile of gold/treasure. You can see them wearing metal gear and helmets as well as them holding swords, which tells us that it’s set in the medieval times. In addition, the lighting is shown right in the centre of the frame which is where most of the drama is happening and is what the producer wants us to see. It clearly shows us what is happening in the frame and what can be seen such as the treasure, swords and the characters. Furthermore, the frame is set in a dark cave-like place as there are props such as rocks seen as well as water flowing through it. You can also see the men holding a fire which also tells us it could be a cave or a tunnel.

The frame on the right shows us crowd of pirates looking at one another. You can instantly tell they are pirates because of the props used. A few of the men are wearing pirate hats and clothes, baggy and dirty. Also some of them have long hair and beards which is what pirates have too. The main character, Captain Jack Sparrow is wearing a belt across his chest and around his waist which is where he either puts his guns or knives. Furthermore, the lighting used is high key lighting where a lot of light has been used to make It look like a sunny day; everything can be seen in this frame. The frame has been set on an island which adds to the pirate theme as well as the ship in the background.

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-En-Scene

Mise-En-Scene is a french term meaning what is seen or put into a frame. It’s the visual information seen for example, the props.
Mise-En-Scene is made up of 5 elements. These are:

C-ostume
L-ighting
A- ctors/facial expressions/body language
M-ake-up
P-rops
S-etting

Costume:
Costumes allow the audience to see what type of person the character is. It also lets us see what time of year the video is in. For example if a woman was wearing a short casual dress, you would be able to tell that the video is set in the 70’s.

Lighting:
Lighting allows the audience to see the important characters within the frame. It also allows us to see the characters facial expressions and hidden emotions when a shadow is used on their face.

Actors/Facial expressions/Body language:
Facial expressions allow the audiences to see how the character is feeling. For example, if the character is crying we can immediately tell that he/she is upset. Similarly, Body language can allow us to see the characters emotions too.

Make-up:
Make-up tells us what the characters personality status and job is. For example, if the character was wearing white powder and red lipstick you can tell the characters job is a clown.

Props:
Props help us know what type of genre the film/video is. It also tells us the characters job just the way make-up does too. For example, a character holding a light saver. The genre of the film would be sci-fi.

Setting:
Settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a completely different turn.

Types of lighting:
1.      Low key lighting
2.      High key lighting

Low key lighting:
This is created by using back lights, which creates sharp contrasts of light and dark areas. An example is Horror films.

High key lighting:
This is created by using more filler lights. The lighting is natural and is realistic to our eyes. It produces bright lights like on sunny days.

Task

Image 1:

Image 1 shows us two characters who are expressing their love for one another. Its shows the female and male characters kissing each other. The fact that the male is dressed in a costume suggests he's the hero who has just saved the female characters life.

Image 2:
Image 2 shows us a male character looking straight into the camera with a serious and cunning  facial expression. It makes the audience think that he either wants to take revenge back on someone or murder someone. Furthermore, the character looks quite irritated and annoyed; like he would lash out on anyone who gets in his way, which suggests something horrific happened in his past.

Analysis of Coke print advert

Analysis of a print advert

The poster on the left shows us a medium close-up image of a coke bottle. The use of having a medium close-up, allows the target market to see the brand of it as well as wanting to emphasise the ‘Zero’ word which tells the target market that its a healthier version than coke. Also, it highlights the importance of the coke bottle as its a close-up of it which immiedietly attracts the target markets eyes as its the first object they'll see on the advert because its the largest image.  In addition, the background shows an image of a silhouette, as we all may know, James Bond. He is known as a strong, dominant and active character. The use of having him in the advert persuades the audience to buy the product so they become like him. Furthermore, the lighting on the character hides his identity which suggests that anyone can be in his position and be like him encourages them to buy it. Moreover, the ‘Skyfall’ sign in the top right corner of the advert links to the image of James Bond. It also tells the target market that if they cannot recognise the character then they can easily tell who he is by just looking at the sign, which immediately provokes the market to buy it as they want to be just like him. Furthermore, the colour scheme of the advert is black which makes it look serious and connotes courage.

Analysis of Reeboks poster (50 Cent)

Analysis of Reeboks poster

The Reeboks poster on the right shows us a good strong central image of 50 Cent. It is shown as a medium close-up which suggests that the focus point is only on his face and that the rest of his body does not matter. It also shows the facial expressions on his face which is shown as very serious and stern, which tells us that he knows what he’s doing. Furthermore, the fingerprint in the background shows us his identity and connotes violence, danger, criminal behaviour and prison. This could have been used to show the target market that 50 Cent had a distressing past. However, the producers of the advert doesn't want to show us this and show it is an oppositional reading.  Moreover, 50 cents army hat links to the quote ‘I am what I am’ as it shows us that he takes control of his own life. The colour scheme which is black and white makes the mood really serious as its really dull and olden day- like. In addition, the there isn’t much lighting on his face, a lot of shadowing has been used which suggests he’s trying to hide his identity and past.

Analysis of Avengers Assemble

Analysis of Avengers Assemble

The Film poster on the right called 'Avengers Assemble' immediately shows the audience that the films narrative is about a group of heroes who come together to save the world. This is due to the fact that, the characters presented on the poster, are all known to be heroes who have helped people in the past or their country in order to have piece and save everyone’s lives. In addition, you can tell that the genre of the film is action and sci-fi as you can see the rubble on the ground as well as fires, planes falling and the town looking a complete wreck. Furthermore, just by looking at the mise-en-scene, you can also instantly see that the genre of the film is a fantasy. This is because of the props being used. Thor is wearing a costume which no one would ever wear as something casual as well as Iron Mans uniform. The use of combining more than one genre together is known as a hybrid. Moreover, the target audience of the film would be aimed at males and females of the ages between 15-55. This is because; people of those ages are interested in Action/Fantasy/Sci-fi films as it intrigues them.

Film Posters-Analysis

Film Posters-Analysis

The film poster called ‘Blade runner’ looks like an action/thriller movie. This is due to the fact that there is a superior/dominant looking man holding a gun which has been half cut off which suggests it could be tricking the audiences eyes into thinking it’s something else. Moreover, there is another man underneath the protagonist (as he has the largest image) dressed in an army outfit holding a cigarette which immediately tells the audiences that the movie is about war. In addition, I think the film is aimed at mostly males of the age 18 and above, because this is the age males have the authority to join the army.

The film poster called ‘Scary Movie 2’ looks like a comedy/thriller movie. This is because of the colours firstly. The colours are really bright and exaggerated which make it ironic as it’s called ‘Scary..’ which connotes dark and creepy however, the colour used in this case are the total opposite. Furthermore, the facial expressions look fake and forced which suggests the genre is a comedy. The poster tells the audiences that the story line could be about a group of friends who come together and watch a ‘Scary movie’ but then as the movie progresses bad things occur. Moreover, I think the film was aimed at males and females in their 20’s and above as the characters in the movie look quite young.

In this third film poster, from just look at the central image I believe that the movie could be about a lost man stranded on a deserted town which was once alive. The genre of the film seems like it’s a thriller movie. This is because of the weather conditions shown; a tornado which suggests something negative will happen again. Furthermore, I think the film is aimed at mostly males aged 25-45. This is due to the fact that most males between these ages are interested in movies similar to this one.

The film poster shown on the left suggest its an adventure/thriller movie. This is firstly because of the title of the poster ‘I’m not scared’ which tells us the character in the movie has to go or do something frightening, however is brave and strong as he is tries to look on the positive side. Furthermore, the story line could be about a young boy who has to go down a whole in the ground to receive or do something. The facial expression presented on his face looks like he is reluctant to go down which tells us something destructive or undesirable is down there. Moreover, I think the film is aimed at both males and females between the ages of 12-30. This is because the character shown in the picture is a young boy. Also, the storyline could intrigue the elder generation (30 years).

The film poster sin city immediately tells us the genre of the film is an action/thriller movie. This is because of the famous actor Jason Strathem who is known for an actor in action movies. Secondly, the man holding the gun suggests its come sunder the violence category. The storyline could be about the main protagonist, in this case Jason, who has to go on a mission or something to do with revenge with many obstacles in the way. I think this movie is aimed at males of the ages between 20-50 as most males these ages are interested in watching action’violence films.

The poster on the right called ‘Pirates of the Caribbean immediately tells us the movie is about a group of pirates from a certain area. Furthermore, poster suggests that the storyline could be about a bunch of pirates who are on a quest or mission to get to a destination (because of the ship shown on the poster) or receive something meaningful and important. The genre of the film is fantasy, action and adventure. Also, Johnny Depp is seen with a gun in his hand which suggests the use of violence will take place within the movie. In addition, the film could be aimed at both males and females aged 15-55. It’s a movie about pirates on a quest which fascinates would fascinate both genders.

The film poster on the right called ‘Bride and Prejudice’  tells us that the film could be about a male and a female who fall in love with each other but however, go through many arguments and misunderstandings, hence the word ‘Prejudice’. Moreover, the facial expression on the female character, to me, looks quite devious and cunning which could suggest that she has planned something evil or wicked or could just be a misinterpretation. Furthermore, the genre of the film could be comedy and romance as of the two characters shown in the front and because of the others in the background which shows them having a laugh and as well as enjoying themselves. I think the target audience for this film is mostly males between the ages of 15-45. This is due to the fact that it is a   a romance; many women of theses ages are mostly interested in romance movies with a bit of laughter.

The film poster called ‘Million dollar baby’ looks like it’s about a dominant and successful woman who has been trained by professionals shown in the background. Furthermore, as she is wearing gym clothes, this could suggest that:  she is either an athlete, expert in sports or a boxer. By looking a
t poster, I assumed that the story line could be about, a woman, having several competitions which she has to train for to reach her goal or succeed in her career. I think the genre of this film is Sports and Drama. I say Drama because it seems like a movie where there is a lot drama and arguing over the specific sport. Moreover, the movie could be aimed at females aged 18-40. This Is because this is usually the age that females want to become active and fit which could be shown in this particular movie.
