MEST2 print brief

1) Write a detailed analysis of this Doctor Who magazine front cover using the 12 key conventions from the notes. For each one, explain the purpose of the convention and the effect or impact it has on the audience.

Title of publication - This is placed in the top third of the cover so that it is easily visible, particularly when stacked with other magazines.Once the title is known, part of it can be covered by the central image. On the doctor who cover, the title is seen at the top of the page where the central image has obscured it slightly. This has been done as the title is well known and so main image, which is what attracts the audience has covered it.

Slogan - this is a short catchy statement or phrase which sums up the magazine which stays in the readers mind.

Central image - This is the main image situated on the magazine cover. When using human models, the designer must not cover the eyes or the mouth as these are the main features which allows us to recognise who the human is. Also, magazines aimed at both males and females use female models.
The Magazine cover has used a good strong central image, in the centre of the page, which appeals to its target audience. The bright lighting used in the background suggests the genre of it is science-fiction. Also, the powerful facial expression portrayed on the main characters face sort of persuades us into reading he is as we make out as if he is specifically looking at us directly, telling us to purchase it.

Flash / cover line / sell line - This is where there are small sub-headings next to the images on the cover.
The Flash line 'the day of the doctor' is situated on the main characters body, which instantly tells us it is about him. It also tells us that it is his day to shine, meaning he has to step up his game and it his is 'day'. In addition, the flash lines on the right side on the cover, tells us about some of the topics it talks about within it.

Bar code - the bar code is located at the bottom right of the cover which is for selling purposes.

Free offer -  Magazines sometimes comes with small gifts or offers which make it more effective. These gifts are usually target at the target market. On the magazine cover, this is seen on the top right of the magazine which persuades the fans of doctor who to buy the magazine as they want the poster.

Competition - Competitions are ways in getting the readers attention. In this magazine there is a competition, giving out doctor who merchandises. These competitions make the readers feel personable and involved with the doctor who magazine making them more loyal to the magazine.

3) Find at least 5 magazine covers aimed at a similar target audience to E4 and embed them on your blog. For each one, pick out one cover line that is similar to one you could use in your own magazine cover (e.g. an interview with a celebrity that also appeals to your target audience).

'Dare to be you'

'The truth hurts'

'Cross dressing'
'unstoppable'

'Broken bones'

'King of leons ---- Queen of gangs'

4) Find at least one TV souvenir magazine cover and embed it on your blog - Doctor Who magazine is always a good option (don't use the example above).

1) Create a spider diagram or bullet point list of all the things your target audience might be interested in. How can you use this information to create a main cover story and smaller cover lines that will appeal to your E4 target audience?

2) Produce an A4 sketch of your front cover including the key conventions you have studied in existing magazines and then planned in planning task 1 above.

 3) Create a spider diagram or bullet point list of ideas for your double-page spread article. Write a list of potential headlines and sub-headings for the article you choose to go with.

4) Produce an A4 landscape sketch of your double page spread design now you have chosen the subject matter.

Photoshoot

1) Which of your main characters will appear on the front cover of your magazine?
On the front cover of my magazine, i will use the main character as it will let the audience know more about the her and know who the protagonist is as well finding out her role in the production due to the clothing she will be wearing.

2) What image or images will you use for the double page spread?
For the double page spread, i will have two large images. On the first page i will have the main protagonist wearing a cap and a hoodie looking right towards the audience and on the second i will have the gangsters standing amongst each other also looking at the audience.

3) Write a shot list for the photoshoot. Make sure you plan  a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.

  • Close-up of protagonist up against a white wall
  • Medium close-up of gangsters also against a white wall.
  • Long-shot of setting
  • Close-up of graffiti

4)What costume, props or make-up will you require for the photoshoot?
I will need the person to wear a hooded jumper as well as a cap on their head. It can be any jumper as long as it doesn't look to rich and 'alive'. I may need the character to put on bright red lipstick, eye liner and mascara to make her look more chav-like.

5) How will you make sure you have everything prepared for the photoshoot on Wednesday 4th January?
To make sure i have everything prepared for the photo shoot, i will need to make check-list to see if i have everything i need. I will also have everything ready before the day of the photoshoot .
