Ill Manors: Broadcast platfrom

DVD extras
What does this tell you about plan B's intentions in make the film?
Plan B's intentions for the film were to make us feel something towards the characters in the film as this happens in real life and so the audience can be aware of what really happens, making them realise that being a member of a notorious group or doing anything dodgy can lead to many implications and so it and so it may change peoples thoughts and perspectives of how they view life.

What do we learn about the production process in ill manors?
In the making of ill manors we learnt many things about the films process. These are that it was cheap to make as Plan B had a low budget because he couldn't afford to pay for the high equipment and so as the background music he used someone rapping rather than using instruments...........

What can you tell about the possible target audience for this short documentary?
The target audience for the movie is mostly aimed at teenagers and over who cannot read or write. This is due to the fact that the characters within the film have a role which are based around people with low intellectual and social development which attracts these people as they can relate to it. Also, as it is set in a derelict and run-down place, the audience instantly realise that it is aimed at individuals in gangs.

Does the film successfully do what the director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and making of documentary.
I think the film did successfully do what the director set out to achieve. This is because in the DVD extra he talked about him wanting to make the audience feel something towards the characters within the film, he doesn't care what they feel, but as long as they feel something, he has achieved what he was intentionally supposed to do. Plan B has achieved this as the audience felt sympathy towards the characters, making them realise that this is serious topic because it happens in real life.

What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience appeal for this interview and say why.
SB. TV is a multi-faceted company by a small team of young people who work on web-based viral content at different music-based events. The media platform has its origins and its routes urban music. Most of its content can be seen on its own you tube channel which was created on 2nd November 2006, or on the official SB.TV website. Much of the content contains unprofessional footage or freestyle rap music videos. However, even though it is earlier uploaded videos contained entirely amateur footage, the channels latest uploads contain professional recordings.
The audience for the channel is aimed mostly at the younger generation as they are the ones who are interested in the latest gossip rather than the older generation.

What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?
This channel is aimed at teenagers as firstly, the presenter is young and secondly, the news they present to the audience appeals to the younger generation rather than the older generation. In the opening of the clip they are trespassing on private property when they shouldn't be. This emphasises the appeal as youngsters may also do this too just to have a bit of fun or just for the sake of it. It also engages the audience as they'd want to know if they get caught or not.

How is Plan B (the band) represented in this text?
Plan B is represented in the text as he is seen looking over the movie on a computer which tells us he represented as a...

Television
What  is the history of the Jonathon Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?
The Jonathan Ross show is a British talk show presented by Jonathan Ross and created by Hotsauce TV. It is located in The London Studios and the BBC Television centre. It was first broadcast on ITV on 3rd September 2011 and comes on Saturday evenings.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.
The target audience would be interpreted as 16-40 years old. This is because the teenagers would be interested in the celebrities being interviewed, such as Rihanna, One Direction and Lady Gaga. The older generation would be interested as Jonathan also interviews important people such as David Cameron.Additionally, because of the rioters and not having answers, Jonathan Ross had an episode which was covering the issue and so attracted more of the older generation.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show? The Jonathan Ross show interviews many famous celebrities, such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce and this would be the reason as to why teenagers are interested in the show. The show is on every Saturday night which means it will have many viewers as people usually spend their Saturday nights at home just watching television. The show has also had many old actors and politicians and this would attract more middle-aged/middle-class people who have an interest in politics and the economy.

4) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?Plan B would be seen as a successful individual as he's being interviewed on the Jonathan Ross show where many well-known people are interviewed. Plan B is also seen as a person who understand why the youth act the way they do and also defends hip-hop as a genre.

Radio

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?
BBC Radio 1 is a British radio station operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation which also broadcasts internationally, specialising in modern and current popular music and chart hits throughout the day. Radio 1 provides alternative genres after 7:00 pm, including electronic dance, hip hop, rock, indie or interviews. It is aimed primarily at the 15–29 age group, although the average age of the UK audience in 2008 was 33. The time people spend with the BBC – on both radio and TV – has declined, as it has for other major broadcasters, probably as a result of audiences having a wider choice of entertainment of all types.

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?Aimed at young target audience (15–24 year olds), particularly, although not exclusively, those from ethnic minorities.

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?Plan B promotes Ill Manors as a film which shows what it happening with the youth and gives explanations to an extent as to why people act the way they do in East London. Plan B played a big role as he had directed, filmed and edited the film. The idea of him being so involved would attract his fans more as they know how good his music is so they would believe his work for the movie would be amazing too.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?Plan B gives an insight of his lifestyle to the audience and describes how he's been sleeping on a sofa based in his studio because of the time and effort he's put into editing Ill Manors.

Double page spread- 500 words

The movie itself
A 16 year old girl lives with her mother in a council estate. She is brought up around gangs and has been slightly influenced to steal when in need due to her being so poor. Her mother has been diagnosed with cancer and is asked to pay a great amount of money for her treatment. However, she cannot afford this and so she joins a notorious gang known for selling drugs, in her neighbourhood. Throughout a year, City (The protagonist) is told to sell drugs as well as to collect them, she messes about with her new friends and touches them e.g slapping their bums but the gang members don’t take any notice of her strange behaviour as this is considered as normal. The main gang member, Mercedes, begins to fully trust City and takes her on a big job. They get into a car and during the course of the journey City starts to touch up Mercedes. This gets her vexed and she realises who she truly is, causing her to arrange her gang to beat City up…

Opinion of the film
My opinion of the movie is that overall it was very successful. The characters had adapted to their roles very well which made everything seem real making it more interesting. The setting was appropriate as it was set in a derelict estate which suits the concept and attracted the audience because they can really relate to it and gain an insight of what reality is really like.  Also, the music it think went extremely well as it added depth to the scenes being played as well as adding tension and suspense at the end where the audience do not know what has happened to City when she gets punched. However, even though my original concept was gay drug dealers, I still think it is successful of using lesbian drug dealers instead, because it firstly adds a twist in the movie and secondly its unique as you wouldn't see a group of girls selling drugs to other people now, would you? And no one has thought of the idea as well.

Interview – City

So how did you find your first movie on set with everyone else?
Umm, well yes this is my first movie and I would say I actually really enjoyed it. It was great meeting new people and making new friends, it was an amazing experience. I loved the make-up and all the different props I was told to wear as it really helped me to get into character. It felt like I had already known everyone, that’s how close we became and most of all, the director. She is probably the best person to work with; she’s really kind and doesn’t shout out you if you get something wrong, so that was one of the best things about working on set.

How did you get the job?
Well I was told there were auditions for a movie called Problematic, I read what it is about which fascinated me a lot and so auditioned. A week later I got a phone call from the director saying I got the part which I was ecstatic about and so here I am.

Lastly, what was your favourite scene?
Ahahaha, my favourite scene ahh I would say the part where I had to be beaten up. I don’t know why but i have always wanted to know what it would be like to get beaten up and I finally know. Well I didn’t actually get beaten up, it was a fake fight but I still loved it.

MEST2 print brief

1) Write a detailed analysis of this Doctor Who magazine front cover using the 12 key conventions from the notes. For each one, explain the purpose of the convention and the effect or impact it has on the audience.

Title of publication - This is placed in the top third of the cover so that it is easily visible, particularly when stacked with other magazines.Once the title is known, part of it can be covered by the central image. On the doctor who cover, the title is seen at the top of the page where the central image has obscured it slightly. This has been done as the title is well known and so main image, which is what attracts the audience has covered it.

Slogan - this is a short catchy statement or phrase which sums up the magazine which stays in the readers mind.

Central image - This is the main image situated on the magazine cover. When using human models, the designer must not cover the eyes or the mouth as these are the main features which allows us to recognise who the human is. Also, magazines aimed at both males and females use female models.
The Magazine cover has used a good strong central image, in the centre of the page, which appeals to its target audience. The bright lighting used in the background suggests the genre of it is science-fiction. Also, the powerful facial expression portrayed on the main characters face sort of persuades us into reading he is as we make out as if he is specifically looking at us directly, telling us to purchase it.

Flash / cover line / sell line - This is where there are small sub-headings next to the images on the cover.
The Flash line 'the day of the doctor' is situated on the main characters body, which instantly tells us it is about him. It also tells us that it is his day to shine, meaning he has to step up his game and it his is 'day'. In addition, the flash lines on the right side on the cover, tells us about some of the topics it talks about within it.

Bar code - the bar code is located at the bottom right of the cover which is for selling purposes.

Free offer -  Magazines sometimes comes with small gifts or offers which make it more effective. These gifts are usually target at the target market. On the magazine cover, this is seen on the top right of the magazine which persuades the fans of doctor who to buy the magazine as they want the poster.

Competition - Competitions are ways in getting the readers attention. In this magazine there is a competition, giving out doctor who merchandises. These competitions make the readers feel personable and involved with the doctor who magazine making them more loyal to the magazine.

3) Find at least 5 magazine covers aimed at a similar target audience to E4 and embed them on your blog. For each one, pick out one cover line that is similar to one you could use in your own magazine cover (e.g. an interview with a celebrity that also appeals to your target audience).

'Dare to be you'

'The truth hurts'

'Cross dressing'
'unstoppable'

'Broken bones'

'King of leons ---- Queen of gangs'

4) Find at least one TV souvenir magazine cover and embed it on your blog - Doctor Who magazine is always a good option (don't use the example above).

1) Create a spider diagram or bullet point list of all the things your target audience might be interested in. How can you use this information to create a main cover story and smaller cover lines that will appeal to your E4 target audience?

2) Produce an A4 sketch of your front cover including the key conventions you have studied in existing magazines and then planned in planning task 1 above.

 3) Create a spider diagram or bullet point list of ideas for your double-page spread article. Write a list of potential headlines and sub-headings for the article you choose to go with.

4) Produce an A4 landscape sketch of your double page spread design now you have chosen the subject matter.

Photoshoot

1) Which of your main characters will appear on the front cover of your magazine?
On the front cover of my magazine, i will use the main character as it will let the audience know more about the her and know who the protagonist is as well finding out her role in the production due to the clothing she will be wearing.

2) What image or images will you use for the double page spread?
For the double page spread, i will have two large images. On the first page i will have the main protagonist wearing a cap and a hoodie looking right towards the audience and on the second i will have the gangsters standing amongst each other also looking at the audience.

3) Write a shot list for the photoshoot. Make sure you plan  a variety of camera shots you will look to capture - medium shots, close-ups etc.

  • Close-up of protagonist up against a white wall
  • Medium close-up of gangsters also against a white wall.
  • Long-shot of setting
  • Close-up of graffiti

4)What costume, props or make-up will you require for the photoshoot?
I will need the person to wear a hooded jumper as well as a cap on their head. It can be any jumper as long as it doesn't look to rich and 'alive'. I may need the character to put on bright red lipstick, eye liner and mascara to make her look more chav-like.

5) How will you make sure you have everything prepared for the photoshoot on Wednesday 4th January?
To make sure i have everything prepared for the photo shoot, i will need to make check-list to see if i have everything i need. I will also have everything ready before the day of the photoshoot .

Ill manors Tedx lecture

1) Embed the above video in your blogpost and read this Guardian article that accompanied the original event. Remember to also look at the comments below - these can give you a variety of different perspectives and criticisms to the original lecture.

2) Make notes on the lecture: focus on Plan B/Ben Drew's views on the opportunities for young people in London and how these inspired Ill Manors.

Ben Drew gave a very inspirational speech about his view and ideology. He originally started his talk by talking about his background and what inspired him, as well as the experiences he had come across during the course of this journey. He also commented on how the media portrays certain things in a particular light. He believes that the thing that derives these anti social behaviour is the fault of society, for excluding and pushing out and away these certain individuals, making them feel less important.Unlike the rest of society ,he does not believe that it is certain individuals fault that they are surrounded by a dysfunctional negative surrounding however feels empathy for them and conveys what he is doing to make change in our society, he further appeals out to people who can help and work like him in different professions with different abilities, as he no longer relies on politics or people with power to help the youngsters in run-down places of London.

3) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies? Explain your answers.

Plan B has a very independent, optimistic attitude towards politics, he acknowledges that the world of media and politics is unjust. He believes that we need to help our selves as well as others around us, when people more fortunate look down on us, 'not talking about financially, talking about knowledge' , 'theses opportunities that change peoples live'.
He also believes that the government 'take' our taxes and don't do the right thing with it. This depicts that he is unhappy with the current, order or situation with how many is being distributed or how it is dealt with. he further adds 'your just going to have to accept it' implying that he is not the sort of person that would weep over things he knows he has no influence to, making it seem unjust and not listening to people's opinions, he has given up on political beliefs because he knows they are corrupt.
Conversely he adds that money is spent of social workers, who may help youngsters trapped in the frivolous looking gang culture.

4) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?

The target audience are people who can fund and help this organisations to disperse money and support the positive work he is spreading within the community. The Psychographics of the audience would be main streamers, people of higher class and people with wealth who are willing to invest their money in an organisation to help shape the lives of the future generation. This is a huge comparison with the the audience to his film Ill manors which shows he is an all rounded person and does not take sides and truly believes everyone is equal regardless of their wealth and class and this is why he is speaking out to people higher up the hierarchy.

5) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panicsRead this summary of moral panics and the definition from Wikipedia and use them in your answer.
Ben Drew doesn't spark a particular liking towards the media, based on previous accounts as the media has unfairly churned and dismantled the original story he was so excited to share with the general public. This can be linked to Cohens media theory of moral panics, as many people trust and depend on the media and for him to undermine and speak badly of them challenges societies dominant representation.
moral panic is an intense feeling expressed in a population about an issue that appears to threaten the social order.[1]Moral panics are in essence controversies that involve arguments and social tension, and in which disagreement is difficult because the matter at its center is taboo. The media have long operated as agents of moral indignation, even when they are not consciously engaged in crusading or muckraking. Simply reporting the facts can be enough to generate concern, anxiety or panic.[3]

Learner response

How are the viewers encouraged by the trailer to see disability?

In the trailer, close-ups have been used to show the disability the individuals have within in. It also portrays them as strong and dominant when completing their sport. This allows the audience to view disabled people in positive way and that everyone is able to achieve through hard work. In addition, low angle shots have been used to portray them as strong and powerful although disabled people are usually looked down upon. However, the individuals in the advert completely contradict this stereotype and showers independence and dedication through them, which encourages the viewers to watch the Paralympics games.

Furthermore, the quick dramatic shots which contain intriguing, powerful and meaningful shots allows the audience to engage into the advert more. Also, the use of having parallel music in the background adds the excitement and thrill of the games, wanting the audience to watch it. At the end of the trailer, you see a group of paralympians standing amongst each other.  A low-angle shot has been used to make them look stronger than they actually look which also adds to the excitement. Furthermore, during the middle of the trailer, you see an upset pregnant women which instanty tells us there is something wrong with her baby, however as the advert progresses we start to think that the pregnant woman should not be upset as her child may come out to be a hard-working successful paralympian. This encourages us to watch it further as it changes our perspective on disabled people.

Ill Manors trailer

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
  • Background music, this can either be parallel or contrapuntal
  • Words on screen - these are words which appear on the screen which sort of sum of the movie
  • Quick dramatic clips - these are where there are intriguing clips from the movie which engage the audience into watching more of the trailer
  • Release date - this is seen either at the beginning or end of the trailer to tell the audience when the movie is coming out
  • Reviews - these are positive reviews by popular/known companies which persuade the audience to watch the movie
  • Voice over - this is where there is a voice in the background speaking whilst a clip is showing to add depth to it
  • Dialogue - this is where a dialogue within the movie is being played in the trailer to show the audience the significance of it.
  • Institutions - this is where companies names are being shown in the trailer somewhere, usually at the end of it
How are trailers distributed?
These conventions were seen throughout the trailer to add depth. Music was being played the whole time to make it seem more tense and interesting.

How does ill manors trailer use trailer conventions?
Ill manors, uses parallel music throughout the trailer to create tension for the audience. It also uses a voice over which allows the audience to gain an insight of what the movie is about, which also engages them into the trailer as they want to know the main narrative of the movie. Towards the middle of the trailer, positive reviews are shown on the screen which encourage the audience to watch the movie as well-known institutions have given the movie positive reviews. In addition, the trailer presents a dialogue between two characters which gives the audience an insight of what the movie is about. Furthermore, it also uses words on screen to sum up the movie in a couple of words. Moreover, there are institutions shown at the end of the trailer which emphasises both the company and the film. As firstly, it persuades more people to watch it as, well known companies are seen at the end of the trailer which can broaden the audience too and  it helps the companies as people who are not familiar with them can now be due to them being shown on the trailer. Also, it gives indications of what type of film it is. Finally, the trailer has a release date shown at the end of the trailer which tells us when the movie will be coming out soon as so people will know when to watch it and where.

Who is the target audience? Does it have unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together - does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there any information about the release date? Is a narrator's voice-over used? Why?

The Film is aimed at teenagers of the ages between 18-30. This is because of its unique selling point. In my opinion this is the narrative of the film. Which is about crime, killing, prostitutes and gang violence. This is its unique selling point as as the target audience can relate to the concept as the same things within the film may happen to them too, such as being a gang member or selling drugs. This attracts them as they may see themselves as the roles of the characters, which could change their perspective of violence as a negative aspect, as it can lead to many dangerous. Furthermore, the way the scenes are edited together in the trailer does give a small clue to the audience of what the concept is about. The trailer uses quick dramatic clips to show highlight the importance of some scenes in the movie. Cuts were also used to gradually move onto another scene as well as another angle to show several perspectives of the scene. Moreover, the main stars in the trailer, were visible in the trailer. However, they were only seen in a couple of the clips and the police were continued being shown which completely tricks the audience as the police played no significant part in the movie, whereas in the trailer they do. In addition, the directors name was shown at the beginning of the trailer which instantly tells us who directed it which persuades us to carry on watching the trailer as a famous artist directed it. Also, the release date is shown towards the end of the trailer which tells us when we can watch the movie and finally, a voice-over is used but is not the narrators. Instead it is one of the characters in the movie who is talking to someone else (dialogue), which adds to the significance of it.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?

The genre of the film has been represented through the characters as firstly, the costumes they're seen in are baggy, old and casual which generally connotes them being in a gang or a notorious group. This immediately tells the audience that the genre is about violence and crime. Also, the genre is represented through the setting and lighting as well as the colour used. This is due to the fact that  it is set in a derelict/ run down town which adds to the genre of the film. Moreover, the lighting used is high key lighting which allows us to see everything within the frame, however, during some of the scenes, low-key lighting is used which makes us only see the figures of their bodies and not what they're doing, this adds to the tension as it makes the audience want to know what they're doing. In addition, the colour used is very dull which adds to the crime-like scene and creates a gloomy mood.

Review of ill manors

Ill Manors - Review
Ill manors is a movie about crime, killing, prostitutes and gang violence of a London community. The characters have to fight in order to escape from the harsh and brutal situation they will be in. Male character Ed, attempts to recover his misplaced phone by provoking crack addict Michelle to have sex with whoever comes knocking on her door, to earn money for his phone she lost. In addition, his partner Aaron experiences a serious crime of conscience. Meanwhile Jake, being the youngest character within the movie, takes his first steps into becoming a killer for hire. Furthermore, prostitute Katya tries to protect her baby from a viscous gang, who gets beaten up through the process.

The director is Ben Drew, who is also known as Plan B. He directed the following movies: The Sweeney, Harry Brown, Adulthood, Ill Manors, Turnout and 4.3.2.1. He is also a famous well-known artist who sang the songs played in the movie.  In my opinion, i think the songs played in the background really reflect the situation that  the characters are in as well as it telling the audience their past life so we know how they got into the  position they are in now. Also, it adds depth to the scene as if we really listen to the words he is singing; it creates a tense/grey atmosphere because it’s causing the audience to feel sympathy towards them.

The main stars used in the movie are Riz Ahmed (Aaron), Ed Skrein (Ed), Natalie Press (Katya), Anoushka Mond (Michelle), Nick Sager (Marcel) and Neil Large (terry). When I first watched the movie I instantly recognised Riz Ahmed who plays the role of Aaron as he stared in the famous movie, Four Lions, which is a popular British Muslim comedy film. So, In my opinion, I think that people will be familiar with him quite soon as he is an interesting character to watch.  Also, i think that the other main characters will be well known as they have all adapted to their roles very well which makes the movie seem more real and fascinating, however Drew has used unknown characters in his movie to add to the realism of the movie and so the audience watch it for the concept and not the famous characters. However, this contradicts the fact that people will have to watch for the narrative as some people may watch it because Plan B directed it.

The genre of the movie is crime fiction drama. This does fit the expectations for this type of film as firstly crimes connotes gangs, violence, sex and drugs which is portrayed in the movie and secondly because it’s all based around drama. In addition, the mood created in the film is dull and depressing as the audience are looking at people being killed over a small issue and women being forced to have sex with men who they do not know. Also, the characters are being presented in derelict and run down homes which makes us feel sorry for them as they don’t really have a life; they have to go through this everyday.

The parallel music used in the background which was sang by Plan B (also the director), reflect and correspond to the scene being played. It allowed the audience to understand what was happening in the scene as well as their past life and how they got into the situation. This made the audience engage into the film more as we realise how harsh and cruel their life is, which makes us feel sorry for them. In addition, the soundtrack created a tense and upsetting atmosphere as it makes us eager to know what happens at the end of the narrative, do they survive? Or do they die?

Ill Manors is aimed at the younger generation of the ages between of 18-30. This is due to the fact that firstly, the older generation would not be doing some of the things shown in the film, secondly the characters used are between these ages and finally, the target audience can relate to this as they may be a member of a gang or they’re life maybe ruined. Also, they may have seen the things presented in the film which can be quite traumatic and so seeing watching the film may make them feel a bit better as they aren’t the only ones who have experienced something dramatic like they have and so the film could help them solve their problem or just make them feel mentally and emotionally better.
